রাজধানীর রমনায় ইঞ্জিনিয়ার্স ইনস্টিটিউশন, বাংলাদেশ (আইইবি) মিলনায়তনে দোয়া ও ইফতার মাহফিল অনুষ্ঠিত হয়েছে। শনিবার বিকেলে আইইবি সদর দপ্তর, ঢাকা কেন্দ্র এবং ইআরসি ঢাকার যৌথ উদ্যোগে এ আয়োজন করা হয়।
অনুষ্ঠানে প্রধান অতিথি হিসেবে উপস্থিত ছিলেন গৃহায়ণ ও গণপূর্তমন্ত্রী জাকারিয়া তাহের, এমপি। তিনি বলেন, দেশের দৃশ্যমান উন্নয়নের পেছনে প্রকৌশলীদের গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অবদান রয়েছে। সড়ক, সেতু থেকে শুরু করে বিভিন্ন বড় অবকাঠামো নির্মাণে প্রকৌশলীরা দিনরাত কাজ করে যাচ্ছেন। ভবিষ্যতেও একটি উন্নত ও টেকসই বাংলাদেশ গড়ে তুলতে প্রকৌশলীরা গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা রাখবেন বলে তিনি আশাবাদ ব্যক্ত করেন।
বিশেষ অতিথি হিসেবে উপস্থিত ছিলেন স্থানীয় সরকার, পল্লী উন্নয়ন ও সমবায় প্রতিমন্ত্রী মীর শাহে আলম, এমপি। তিনি বলেন, দেশের মেধাবী শিক্ষার্থীদের একটি বড় অংশ প্রকৌশলী বা চিকিৎসক হিসেবে গড়ে ওঠেন। তবে প্রশাসনিক কাঠামোর কারণে অনেক সময় কারিগরি পদে অকারিগরি জনবল নিয়োগ দেওয়া হয়, যা উন্নয়ন কর্মকাণ্ডে নানা প্রতিবন্ধকতা সৃষ্টি করে। সুষ্ঠু উন্নয়নের স্বার্থে কারিগরি পদে কারিগরি জনবল নিয়োগ নিশ্চিত করার ওপর তিনি গুরুত্বারোপ করেন।
গৃহায়ণ ও গণপূর্ত প্রতিমন্ত্রী আহম্মদ সোহেল মনজুর, এমপি বলেন, বিভিন্ন পেশাজীবী সংগঠনের মতো প্রকৌশলীরাও নানা সীমাবদ্ধতা ও সমস্যার মুখোমুখি হন। তিনি আশা প্রকাশ করেন, প্রকৌশলীদের বিদ্যমান সমস্যাগুলো সরকার আন্তরিকতার সঙ্গে বিবেচনা করবে এবং প্রয়োজনীয় সমাধান দেবে। দেশের উন্নয়নের ধারাবাহিকতা বজায় রাখতে তিনি প্রকৌশলীদের ঐক্যবদ্ধভাবে কাজ করার আহ্বান জানান।
নরসিংদী-৫ আসনের সংসদ সদস্য প্রকৌশলী মো. আশরাফ উদ্দিন (বকুল) বলেন, দীর্ঘদিন ধরেই প্রকৌশলীরা নানা ক্ষেত্রে অবহেলার শিকার। অতীতে আন্দোলন-সংগ্রামে যুক্ত প্রকৌশলীদের যথাযথ মূল্যায়ন করা প্রয়োজন। পাশাপাশি বিভিন্ন সময়ে চাকরি হারানো প্রকৌশলীদের বিষয়টিও গুরুত্ব দিয়ে বিবেচনার দাবি জানান তিনি।
এসোসিয়েশন অব ইঞ্জিনিয়ার্স বাংলাদেশ (এ্যাব)-এর আহ্বায়ক প্রকৌশলী শাহরিন ইসলাম তুহিন বলেন, প্রকৌশল খাতের বিশেষায়িত অনেক পদে বিশেষজ্ঞ প্রকৌশলীদের পরিবর্তে অকারিগরি জনবল নিয়োগ দেওয়া হচ্ছে। এতে উন্নয়ন প্রকল্প বাস্তবায়নে জটিলতা তৈরি হচ্ছে এবং কাজের গতি কমে যাচ্ছে। মেধা ও যোগ্যতার ভিত্তিতে প্রকৌশলীদের যথাযথ পদায়নের আহ্বান জানান তিনি।
অনুষ্ঠানে সভাপতিত্ব করেন আইইবির প্রেসিডেন্ট প্রকৌশলী মোহাম্মদ রিয়াজুল ইসলাম (রিজু)। তিনি বলেন, প্রকৌশলীদের ন্যায্য অধিকার ও পেশাগত মর্যাদা প্রতিষ্ঠায় আইইবি সবসময় কাজ করে যাচ্ছে। এ বিষয়ে সরকারের সঙ্গে আরও আলোচনা ও উদ্যোগ নেওয়া হবে বলেও জানান তিনি।
স্বাগত বক্তব্য দেন আইইবির ভারপ্রাপ্ত সম্মানী সাধারণ সম্পাদক প্রকৌশলী মুহাম্মদ আহসানুল রাসেল। তিনি আইইবির ইতিহাস তুলে ধরে বলেন, ব্রিটিশ আমলে প্রতিষ্ঠিত এই প্রতিষ্ঠানটি স্বাধীনতার পর ইঞ্জিনিয়ার্স ইনস্টিটিউশন, বাংলাদেশ নামে নতুন পরিচয়ে দেশের প্রকৌশলীদের পেশাগত উন্নয়নে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা রেখে চলেছে। তিনি আরও বলেন, আইইবির অধীনস্থ ইঞ্জিনিয়ারিং স্টাফ কলেজ, বাংলাদেশ (ইএসসিবি) প্রকৌশলীদের পেশাগত দক্ষতা বৃদ্ধিতে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা পালন করছে।
অনুষ্ঠানে আরও বক্তব্য দেন আইইবি ঢাকা কেন্দ্রের চেয়ারম্যান প্রকৌশলী হেলাল উদ্দিন তালুকদার এবং ইআরসি ঢাকার ভাইস-চেয়ারম্যান প্রকৌশলী খান আতাউর রহমান সান্টু।
অনুষ্ঠানে আইইবির ভাইস-প্রেসিডেন্ট (প্রশাসন ও অর্থ) ও আয়োজক কমিটির আহ্বায়ক প্রকৌশলী এ.টি.এম. তানবীর-উল হাসান (তমাল) ধন্যবাদ জ্ঞাপন করেন। অনুষ্ঠানটি সঞ্চালনা করেন আয়োজক কমিটির সদস্যসচিব ও আইইবি ঢাকা কেন্দ্রের সম্মানী সম্পাদক প্রকৌশলী কে. এম. আসাদুজ্জামান।

IEB Hosts Ramadan Prayer and Iftar Ceremony in Dhaka

The Engineers’ Institution, Bangladesh (IEB), in collaboration with its Dhaka Centre and ERC Dhaka, organized a special Ramadan prayer and iftar ceremony at the IEB Auditorium in Ramna on Saturday afternoon. The event brought together leading engineers, policymakers, and parliamentary representatives to mark the holy month of Ramadan and celebrate the contributions of the engineering community to national development.
The programme’s chief guest, Zakaria Taher, MP, Minister for Housing and Public Works, praised the nation’s engineers for their tireless efforts in building the country’s infrastructure, from roads and bridges to major public facilities. “Engineers have been instrumental in Bangladesh’s visible development. Their continuous dedication ensures a sustainable and progressive future for our nation,” he said, expressing confidence that engineers will continue to play a pivotal role in national development.
Mir Shah Alam, MP, State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, attended as a special guest. He highlighted concerns over administrative structures that often place non-technical personnel in technical positions, hampering development initiatives. “For effective governance and project execution, technical posts must be filled by qualified engineers. This is now more important than ever to fulfil the promises outlined in the Prime Minister’s election manifesto,” he emphasized.
Another special guest, Ahmad Sohel Monjur, MP, State Minister for Housing and Public Works, acknowledged the challenges faced by professional associations and expressed optimism that the government, under the Prime Minister’s leadership, would address the issues confronting engineers. He called upon engineers to remain united to strengthen ongoing national development efforts.
Engineer Md. Ashraf Uddin (Bakul), MP of Narsingdi-5, pointed out that engineers have long faced neglect over the past 17 years. He urged proper recognition for those who have fought for the profession, as well as attention to engineers who lost jobs during difficult periods and have yet to be reinstated.
Shahrin Islam Tuhin, Convener of the Association of Engineers Bangladesh (AEB), expressed concern over the replacement of specialized technical engineers with non-technical officials in critical positions, slowing down project implementation and increasing technical complications. He urged the government to ensure merit-based appointments and proper placement of qualified engineers to enhance efficiency in development projects.
The ceremony was presided over by IEB President Engineer Mohammad Riazul Islam (Riju), who reiterated the institution’s commitment to safeguarding engineers’ professional rights and assured that further initiatives would be undertaken to communicate these issues with government authorities.
Welcoming guests, Engineer Muhammad Ahsanul Rasel, Acting Honorary Secretary of IEB, provided a brief history of the institution, noting its origins during the British colonial period and its post-independence transformation into the Engineers’ Institution, Bangladesh. He also highlighted the role of the Engineering Staff College, Bangladesh (ESCB), established in 2004 in Munshiganj, in enhancing the professional skills of engineers nationwide.
The programme featured remarks from Engineer Helal Uddin Talukdar, Chairman of IEB Dhaka Centre, and Engineer Khan Ataur Rahman Santu, Vice-Chairman of ERC Dhaka.
ATM Tanvir-ul Hasan (Tamal), Vice-President (Administration and Finance) of IEB and Convener of the Organizing Committee, expressed gratitude to attendees, while the programme was conducted by KM Asaduzzaman, Member Secretary of the Organizing Committee and Honorary Secretary, Dhaka Centre.
IEB’s senior officials and engineers from various centres and chapters attended, including Vice-Presidents Khan Monjur Morshed, Sheikh Al Amin, and Niyaz Uddin Bhuiyan, as well as Honorary Assistant Secretaries Mohammad Mahbub Alam, Md. Nur Amin, and Sabbir Ahmed Osmani. Other notable attendees included Abdullah Al Mamun, Kamrul Hasan (Uzzal), Shaheen Howlader, Robiul Alam Uzzal, Motahar Hossain, Alamgir Hasin Ahmed, Sarwar Anichur Rahman Rana, Mohiuddin Ahmed (Selim), and Mohammad Kamrul Hasan Khan, alongside members of IEB’s engineering divisions, chapters, and affiliated institutions.
The ceremony concluded with prayers and the traditional iftar, celebrating both the spirit of Ramadan and the professional achievements of Bangladesh’s engineering community.
